The Visual Effects Society is commemorating its twentieth anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration, the membership was polled on which movies they thought were the 70 most influential VFX films of all time. Not unsurprisingly, James Cameron’s direction brought in the most entries with The Abyss, Aliens, AVATAR, Terminator, Terminator 2 and Titanic.
There are films from the start of the last century, right up to the end of judging which was at the end of 2015. The list includes the French silent 1902 film from Georges Melies Le Voyage dans la Lune of course, and rounding out with two standout productions from 2015 Ex Machina (2015 VFX Oscar winner) and Mad Max: Fury Road.
Almost as interesting as those films on the list are the movies that are missing. Got a suggestion? Bill Desowitz’s article for Indiewire has the entire list.
